Dove Cameron Launches Bold New Chapter with Debut Hit “Too Much

Dove Cameron Richie Shazam recently opened up about her return to music with Billboard over a Zoom call. The singer-actor mentioned that she had been out of the industry for almost two years.

After patiently waiting, fans can finally enjoy “Too Much,” a danceable track released on Friday (Feb. 21), which serves as a kiss-off towards an unsupportive lover. With its throbbing synths and pounding beat, it echoes Lady Gaga’s early hits in terms of sound.

Although sonically different from her top-20 hit “Boyfriend,” the song was inspired by real-life incidents where she had to confront people criticizing her talkativeness. Cameron realized that it wasn’t necessary for her to modify herself just to fit into other people’s expectations, and hopes this message can resonate with others struggling with similar issues.

During her break from the industry, which included therapy sessions and personal introspection, Dove found a new perspective on life and is in a much more positive place. Her relationship with M?neskin frontman Damiano David has played a significant role in this transformation.

The singer-actor’s latest material showcases her foray into dance music, something she previously believed would be incongruent with her personality. She credits artists like Lady Gaga and Marina as inspiration for overcoming these judgements. “I’m having more fun than ever,” Cameron said about the creative process.

Cameron has also taken on a new acting challenge in an upcoming psychosexual thriller for Amazon Prime, based on Catherine Ryan Howard’s book 56 Days. Despite initial anxiety due to nudity requirements, she embraced the role as a step towards personal growth. “If there’s anything I feel like I can’t do, then I have to do it,” Cameron explained.

While the film doesn’t have an official release date yet, Dove is eager for audiences to see her in this new role. The character of Ciara has been described as a dream opportunity and inspired by the source material from Howard’s book.
